Update – 12/08/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities yesterday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 5,942.  1 new death was reported raising the total number to 214. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 26 – up from 24 on Tuesday.

196 new SARS-CoV-2 infections and a further increase in the number of intubated patients were announced yesterday, fueling concerns about the course of the pandemic given the impending August 15 national holiday, the traditional peak in terms of traveler mobility in the summer.

The Greek health authorities have conducted a total of 669,739 coronavirus tests thus far.

Deputy Minister of Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias described the coming days as critical, urging the public to be particularly consistent regarding health measures on August 15.

“This is what we need to do right now: Stop the spread of the virus with our behavior so that we are not faced in a few days with a strong second wave of the pandemic,” he said.

The mandatory closure from midnight to 7 a.m. of bars and restaurants in the areas that have already been announced includes all catering and beverage distribution businesses and canteens. Only delivery and takeaway services are excluded, which do not concern the availability of drinks.

Violations entail a 10,000-euro fine, while those caught following a second violation will be ordered to close for 20 days.

• 6 are imported cases, who tested voluntarily
• 82 cases were detected in the regional unit of Attica
• 42 cases were detected in the regional unit of Thessaloniki
• 2 cases were detected in the regional unit of Argolida
• 1 case was detected in the regional unit of Viotia
• 2 cases were detected in the regional unit of Evros
• 2 cases were detected in the regional unit of Evia
• 2 cases were detected in the regional unit of Karditsa
