As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 163,946. 21 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 5,972. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 262. 733 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 360 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 76 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.
The Greek Minister of Citizen Protection, Nikos Chardalias, announced new, stricter lockdown measures in the regions of Patra, Agios Nikolaos, Mykonos, Santorini and Chalkida Friday. Patra, located in the northwestern Peloponnese, the Cretan town of Agios Nikolaos, and Chalkida, on Evia, as well as the islands of Mykonos and Santorini, are now all considered “red zones,” or areas where transmission of Covid-19 is particularly high.
Under the stricter lockdown measures, all movement away from one’s home will be limited to necessary trips only. This means that non-essential stores in the three cities will be completely closed, even for curbside pickup. Additionally, schools will be closed in Patra, Santorini, Mykonos, Agios Nikolaos, and Chalkida.
Due to the rising number of cases of the coronavirus in Attica, Thessaloniki, and Chalkidiki, officials have put a new weekend curfew in place in those regions, starting Saturday, February 6. The curfew will limit movement from 6 PM to 5 AM on the weekend only.
Movement from 6 PM to 5 AM is restricted to emergencies, taking pets for a walk, or going to and from work — with all the necessary paperwork completed.
During weekdays, the nighttime curfew lasting from 9 PM to 5 AM will still be in effect in these areas.
In Attica, Thessaloniki, and Chalkidiki, all schools will remain open, except for high schools, which will operate through online classes. On Saturdays, all non-essential businesses in these areas will remain closed. Essential businesses, including grocery stores, bakeries, and pharmacies, will be open from 7 AM to 5 PM. Farmers’ markets which are scheduled for Saturdays, however, will not take place. Additionally, non-essential businesses in Attica, Chalkidiki, and Thessaloniki will operate on a curbside pickup basis only.
Previously, shoppers could book an appointment to go shopping in stores selling clothes, shoes, and jewelry. Now customers will have to order all their items online or by phone, and then choose a time to pick them up from the store, a process called “click away.”
These new measures will last until February 15.
Greece extended restrictions on both domestic and international flights on Sunday for at least two more weeks. According to the Civil Aviation Authority the air directives (COVID-19 NOTAMs) will last until February 15 for the domestic routes and for until February 22 for the international ones. In particular, the air directive concerning domestic flights is extended until Monday February 15, 2021 at 06:00 in the morning local time.
Only essential domestic travel is allowed at the airports in the country. It includes travel for health issues and business purposes. Travel for objective family reasons (such as family reunification) and for return to permanent residence is also allowed.
Regarding the international flight routes, the new restrictions will last at least until Monday, February 22, 2021 at 06:00 in the morning, local time.
More specifically, the measures include the prohibition of entry to Greece of nationals other than from the member-states of the European Union and the Schengen Area. The Greek NOTAM excludes citizens of the United Kingdom, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Rwanda, South Korea, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, the Russian Federation and Israel. The nationals of the above countries will be able to visit Greece.
Japan has been removed from this list of exemptions from authorized third countries in relation to the pre-existing air directive.
