As of the latest update by the Greek authorities on Wednesday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 18,475. 3 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 391. Amid continuing concerns about the rise in coronavirus infections, health authorities were on alert on Wednesday after 35 residents of a retirement home in Agios Panteleimonas tested positive for the virus. The government’s chief epidemiologist Sotiris Tsiodras and Deputy Civil Protection Minister Nikos Hardalias visited the home where other residents and staff were to be tested. “Things are not going well in Athens,” Tsiodras said, referring to the course of the virus in the capital, noting that such outbreaks at retirement homes are usually triggered by staff.

Two men have been placed under police guard in Crete after they allegedly breached quarantine rules. The two men, said to be French nationals aged 32 and 33, had been ordered to self-isolated in a designated hotel after testing positive to coronavirus on their arrival at Hania airport.

Education Minister Niki Kerameus on Wednesday vowed measures to make up for lost teaching hours in schools affected by student sit-ins. Pupils have locked down hundreds of school grounds across the country, mostly over coronavirus measures. Kerameus on Wednesday said classes would be held on school holidays, Saturdays and instead of field trips to compensate for lost time. She added that lessons would revert to distance learning for all schools affected by protest action.

A total of 2,800 teachers at Greek primary and secondary schools have been exempted from teaching in classrooms as they belong to high-risk groups for infection from the coronavirus. New teachers are to be recruited to fill some of the gaps while the 2,800 who have exemptions are to give online lessons from their homes to students who, for reasons of their own, are continuing lessons from home.
