As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece 1,965,719. 103 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 23,608. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 563. 24,308 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 7,150 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 2,863 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.
Greece plans to start administering the Novavax protein vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 in early March, General Secretary of Primary Healthcare Marios Themistokleous said Tuesday.
He announced that Greece is expected to receive 474,000 doses of this vaccine in February and March. The first batch of 168,000 shots are to arrive on February 21. The Novavax vaccine will become part of the country’s vaccination program from the beginning of March and will be distributed to specific vaccination centers.
It is administered in two doses and has not been prepared based on mRNA technology but on that of more classic vaccines, such as influenza or tetanus shots, which may convince some skeptics to get inoculated.
Until Tuesday, more than 7,760,000 citizens (73.8% of the general population) had been vaccinated with at least one dose of the vaccine, while 7,330,000 had received two doses (69.8%). Moreover 4,880,000 citizens had received a booster shot, while an additional 200,000 had scheduled appointments.
The number of people over 60 who choose to get vaccinated is also increasing, albeit at a slower pace. According to Themistokleous, from last Monday until Tuesday, 10,000 new appointments had been scheduled by people in that age group.
Foreign and Greek nationals who have been vaccinated for Covid-19 in any of 60 countries that are part of the European Certificate program can now sign up on the online Greek National Vaccination Registry, Deputy Digital Governance Minister George Georgantas told Parliament on Monday.
According to Georgantas, people who have been administered a single or two doses of a vaccine in one of the European Union’s 27 countries or in another 33 besides those can register on the anagnorisi.emvolio.gov.gr platform (also available in English) to have their certificates recognized. The platform may also be used by those who have received two doses in Greece and a booster shot abroad.
Those who have received two doses and want to get a booster shot in Greece may arrange an appointment through the same platform, the government official told MPs.
A Greek certificate facilitates admission to indoor venues that are open only to fully vaccinated people. These include restaurants, theaters and entertainment and music venues, among others.
People who have been vaccinated in a country other than the 60 included in the European certification program can apply for recognition of any valid vaccination certificates they have at any Citizens’ Service Center (KEP).
Under Greek law, people over the age of 60 who have not been inoculated against Covid-19 face a fine of 100 euros for every month they remain unvaccinated.
A prosecutor in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, has ordered an investigation into claims made by a unionist that the management of a local hospital threw a party last month that violated coronavirus safety rules.
The head of the union representing the AHEPA Hospital’s workers said that some 120 people attended the bash, which was thrown by management for the annual custom of cutting a cake and exchange wishes for the New Year. He also claimed that the party was held indoors and that safety measures were not being applied.
Panagiotis Panteliadis, AHEPA’s chief administrator, has dismissed the allegations, saying that a cake-cutting ceremony was held, but that it was in accordance with all the required protocols, the Athens-Macedonian News Agency reported.
