Update – 02/04/2021

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 267,172. 67 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 8,760. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 755. 3,491 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 1,649 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 467 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

The first do-it-yourself Covid-19 tests will arrive in Attica on Monday before being distributed across Greece, according to sources available to Kathimerini.  Government spokesperson Aristotelia Peloni said that students and teachers will be a priority as self-testing is considered an important tool to re-open schools. Health authorities are expected to release a video instructing citizens on how to use the self-test kit prior to its distribution to pharmacies across the country next week.

Authorities said citizens will have access to four free test kits a month, one per week.

Officials have previously said that the do-it-yourself test kits have an accuracy rate of about 95-99 percent.

They are also easier to conduct than rapid tests, as they require nasal and saliva samples instead of the nasopharyngeal sample used in rapid tests.

The suppliers of the self-test kit are reportedly Roche and a separate Chinese firm.

All people aged over 60 over the age of 60 and all those with serious underlying health problems will have received at least a first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine by early May, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Thursday during a visit to an inoculation center in the northern Athens district of Agia Paraskevi.

“If things go well, we will conduct 1.5 million vaccinations in April alone, which is a little less than what we have done in the three months – from January to March – and we are sure that by the beginning of May, we will have vaccinated all our fellow citizens over 60 [years of age] and all our fellow citizens with severe underlying diseases, with at least one dose,” he said.

Health authorities have so far completed about 1.7 million vaccinations, said the prime minister, who hailed the professionalism of healthcare employees working tirelessly to vaccinate people. “It is important,” he stressed, that Greece receives a large batch of vaccines next month.

The government will be able to provide extraordinary funding to the Church of Greece and other religious organizations in the country, to address the needs that have arisen due to the pandemic.

The relevant legislation submitted to Parliament by the Education Ministry as an amendment to a Health Ministry bill allows the state to pay a one-off extraordinary grant to the Church of Greece, the Church of Crete, the Dodecanese Dioceses, the Central Jewish Council of Greece, religious legal entities and licensed religious communities in order to meet the needs created by the pandemic and support their charitable work.  “Whoever is legal can benefit from the regulation,” a government official told Kathimerini.

The pandemic-driven revenue drop has affected the Church of Greece’s approximately 4,500 charities and structures whose staff are not paid from the state budget but from the metropolises’ own resources.
