Update – 02/09/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities yesterday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 10.524. 5 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 271. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 36.

207 cases where announced yesterday in Greece, raising the daily number of cases above 200. 97 of the new cases were found in the Attica region.

Greek officials confirmed that the reopening of schools which was originally planned for September 7, will be postponed for a week to September 14 due to the upward trend in coronavirus infections and in order to ensure that families who are still on vacation have enough time to come back and spend some time at home before children return to classrooms.

In outlining the measures put in place, Greek Minister of Education Niki Kerameus highlighted that the use of masks in outdoor and indoor spaces will be mandatory for teachers and students. Free masks will be provided by the Greek Government to students and educators in both public and private schools. She also stressed that education about the correct use of masks will be provided to students.

Additionally, students will take breaks at different times to avoid crowding in schools. Antiseptic will be located throughout schools, and facilities will be thoroughly cleaned on a regular basis to avoid the spread of the virus. If just one case of the virus is identified in a school, it will be closed, and there will be strict contact tracing instituted in order to stop a potential outbreak. Kerameus also stated that all classes will be ready to switch to online learning immediately, if that becomes necessary.
