Update – 02/10/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities on Thursday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 18,886. 2 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 393. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 89. 411 new cases where announced yesterday in Greece, raising the daily number above 400. A record 272 of the new cases were found in the Attica region.

The coronavirus outbreak in Attica causes great concern. The President of the Hellenic Society for Infectious Diseases, Mr. Panagiotis Gargalianos, stated that we will have to wait for 14 days in order to see if the measures that have been already taken are effective. “Cases aside, it is disturbing that we have maintained the increase in cases and mainly the increase in intubations. This is expressing a pressure on the system and is something that we wish not to happen because it will cause a large problem.” Mr. Gargalianos who is also a member of the Covid Committee in Greece, continued, “we will not suggest a curfew, but I am not sure if a curfew for specific hours is going to be decided. This is a very harsh measure, but if we are under a lot of pressure, we might have to take it.”.

An outbreak of five cases among hospital staff, including nurses and doctors, at Sotiria Hospital in Athens has caused special alarm yesterday. The outbreak has shut down the thoracic surgery unit of the hospital, where the cases were identified, in order to halt any further spread of the virus.

According to the Ministry of Education, 17 schools have suspended classroom teaching due to the coronavirus.
