Update – 02/11/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities on Sunday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 40,929. 9 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 635. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 140. 1,678 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece, maintaining the daily number above 1,000. 300 of the new cases were found in the Attica region.

A new negative record with 2,056 new coronavirus cases was announced on Saturday evening. Thessaloniki has topped the list with 839 new cases. What is worrying is the daily increase of Covid-19 patients in need of intubation and the increasing rate of positive cases as resulted by the conducted tests.

Coronavirus cases in Greece surpassed 40,000 on Sunday after 1,678 new cases were confirmed in the past 24 hours. In the same time, another 9 Covid-19 patients died. For the third consecutive day, the number of intubations hit another negative record as there are currently 140 Covid patients who need the aid of an intubator in order to be able to breathe.

A new wave of restrictions aimed at curbing a spike in coronavirus infections – announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Saturday – comes into effect from Tuesday, closing bars and restaurants in high-risk areas and making the use of face masks and a nighttime curfew mandatory nationwide. The restrictions, which are to apply for a month from 6 a.m. Tuesday, aim to avert the need for a full nationwide lockdown. The government’s one-month plan effectively divides the country into two zones from the current four – putting regions in risk level three and four into one zone and grouping levels one and two where infections are still low. In the higher-risk zone, which includes Attica and Thessaloniki, bars and restaurants will close – though delivery and takeaway services will be permitted – along with cinemas, gyms, theaters and museums. Schools, banks, and retail stores will remain open. A curfew, from midnight to 5 a.m., will apply nationwide, as will the mandatory use of face masks in all public areas. Travel between regions will be permitted, unlike in the first lockdown in the spring.

It is a “mathematical certainty” that the Greek public health system will come under significant pressure if current trends of coronavirus transmission persist, infectious disease expert Sotiris Tsiodras told an online conference on Friday. Tsiodras, who is one of the government’s key advisers on the management of the pandemic, warned that while the surge in new cases in previous weeks related mostly to younger adults and teenagers, there have been around 1,000 infections reported in the past seven days among people aged over 55, confirming experts’ fears that the virus is being transmitted to older age groups.

The Hellenic Police has stepped up its inspections to check compliance with restrictions put in place to curb the spread of the coronavirus, with its officers carrying out 47,869 checks on Friday. Officers registered a total of 1,518 violations of rules stipulating the mandatory use of face masks in public areas and 344 violations of a public curfew between 12.30 and 5 a.m., fining violators 150 euros each.

The Greek government has indirectly admitted that it takes no actions whatsoever to strengthen the Health Care system amid the growing pandemic. It announced that regular surgeries are decreased by 80% in regions with increased risk for Covid-19 and by 20% in the remaining in increased surveillance. The cuts were announced on Saturday evening during a live coronavirus briefing by Head of Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias, who did not even bother to previously inform neither hospital doctors nor personnel.

European Union health ministers will discuss limiting non-essential travel to Europe at a virtual meeting on Friday, German health minister Jens Spahn said. “The topic of the meeting is also of course the current pandemic situation and especially the question whether and how we can restrict non-essential travel into the EU,” Spahn said in a video message posted on Twitter.
