Update – 03/11/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities on Monday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 42,080. 7 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 642. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 153. 1,152 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece, maintaining the daily number above 1,000. 362 of the new cases were found in the Attica region.

Greece will impose a two-week lockdown in regions of Thessaloniki and Serres in the north to contain a resurgence in Covid-19 cases, government spokesman Stelios Petsas said on Monday. The country has reported fewer cases of the novel coronavirus than most in Europe, but it has seen a significant increase in infections since early October. The latest measures include the suspension of flights to and from Thessaloniki over the two-week period, which will come into effect on Tuesday along with the expansion of a night-time curfew on movement and the closure of restaurants and bars in the most populous areas of the country for one month.

A new wave of restrictions aimed at curbing a spike in coronavirus infections – announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Saturday – comes into effect from today, closing bars and restaurants in high-risk areas and making the use of face masks and a night-time curfew mandatory nationwide. The restrictions, which are to apply for a month from 6 a.m. today, aim to avert the need for a full nationwide lockdown. The government’s one-month plan effectively divides the country into two zones from the current four – putting regions in risk level three and four into one zone and grouping levels one and two where infections are still low. In the higher-risk zone bars and restaurants will close – though delivery and takeaway services will be permitted – along with cinemas, gyms, theaters and museums. Schools, banks and retail stores will remain open.

The Hellenic Police is continuing with its inspections to check compliance with restrictions put in place to curb the spread of the coronavirus, with its officers carrying out 51,650 checks on Sunday. Officers registered a total of 1,202 violations of rules stipulating the mandatory use of face masks in public areas and 278 violations of a public curfew between 12.30 and 5 a.m. Of the face mask violations, 509 were in Attica, 172 in Central Macedonia and 128 in Thessaloniki, while 168 of the 278 violations of the nighttime public curfew were in the greater Athens area, with another 33 in Central Macedonia and another 21 in Thessaloniki. Eighteen people were arrested for violating rules relating to the operating of businesses, such as permitting overcrowding, with five businesses being ordered to close – two in Attica and three in Central Macedonia. Another three businesses were fined 10,000 euros each and forced to close for three days for operating beyond a 12.30 a.m. cutoff time for bars and restaurants.

The union representing the country’s judges has appealed to the government to restrict the number of trials at the country’s administrative courts to the very minimum for the duration of the second phase of the pandemic to ensure that judges, court staff, legal workers and the general public are not unnecessarily exposed to the virus. The union asked for certain less pressing hearings to be automatically postponed until the second wave of the pandemic has passed and restrictions have been eased.
