As of the latest update by the Greek authorities yesterday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 10.998. 5 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 278. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 39.

After four months of negative tests after recovering from an initial bout of Covid-19, a 45-year-old man in the Northern Greek city of Xanthi has tested positive for coronavirus once again. After testing positive for the virus in April and recovering one month later, the man took a total of eight tests, all of which came back negative. His most recent tests, however, came back positive for Covid-19. In the month of August, officials recorded a total of 23 Covid cases in Xanthi. In the beginning of the pandemic, the city was the site of a large outbreak. Experts are still studying if the man had been re-infected or not. Some argue that positive test results after recovery may signal an immune response from the body, while others propose that they may indicate remnants of the virus are still present in the body from the initial infection. If it is confirmed that the man has indeed been reinfected with the virus, it will be only the third such case in the world.

Three Greek government ministers were forced into quarantine on Thursday after they were told that a person they had all met the previous day had been diagnosed with Covid-19. Health authorities also ordered the shutting down of the Ministry of Development and Investments, where the meetings took place. The three ministers, Adonis Georgiadis, Nikos Papathanasis and Giannis Plakiotakis cancelled all their official engagements and will remain isolated at their homes. Georgiadis and his Deputy at the Ministry of Development and Investment, Papathanasis, were to accompany Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in a visit to Thessaloniki.

Two residents at the Oinofyta refugee camp in Viotia, north of the Greek capital, have tested positive for Covid-19, prompting a lockdown of the facility to the stem the spread of the virus, the Migration Ministry said on Thursday night. The outbreak at the camp – which was built for around 500 people but is thought to host almost double that number – started with a 45-year-old single father from Iraq who tested positive for the virus and has been hospitalized with minor symptoms. The man’s daughter appears to be unaffected by the virus, but tests conducted on 18 people the man had come into contact with identified one more case. A 27-year-old Syrian woman who has been told to self-isolate as contact tracing continues and more tests are carried out on camp residents and staff.
