Update – 04/11/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities on Tuesday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 44,246. 13 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 655. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 169. 2,166 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece, raising the daily number above 2,000. 542 of the new cases were found in the Attica region.

As daily coronavirus infections broke a new record on Tuesday, and amid growing concern about the capacity of the National Health System to respond to a further escalation, health experts have stressed that new restrictions that came into effect on Tuesday must be enforced if Attica is to avoid a lockdown. Experts are monitoring the rise in infections in Attica as well as the rate of Covid-19 tests that are positive. Another key consideration is the occupancy rate of beds in intensive care units set aside for Covid patients. On Monday, 70% of ICU beds for Covid patients in Attica were taken. Infections increased by 30% from last week, while in Thessaloniki, which on Tuesday went into full lockdown, cases more than doubled. Meanwhile, from the viral load traced in tests on sewage in Attica on Sunday, experts surmise that there are around 52,000 active Covid infections in Attica. Deputy Health Minister Vassilis Kontozamanis said that 209 of the country’s 331 ICU beds for Covid patients are occupied. In Thessaloniki, 63 of the 83 ICU beds are taken and in Attica 99 of the 140.

Greece expanded a night curfew on movement and shut restaurants, bars, theatres and museums in the most populous areas of the country for one month on Tuesday to fight a resurgence in Covid-19 amid a new peak in infections. The country has reported fewer cases than most in Europe after going into an early lockdown during the first wave of the pandemic in the spring but has seen a gradual increase in infections since early October. Many Greeks fear the new rules will hurt economic activity in a country that recently emerged from a decade-long debt crisis.

The Hellenic Police is stepping up inspections to check compliance with restrictions put in place to curb the spread of the coronavirus with officers carrying out 47,161 checks on Monday. Officers registered 1,444 violations of a regulation stipulating the mandatory use of face masks in all public areas and 210 violations of a public curfew between 12.30 and 5 a.m. Meanwhile seven people were arrested for violating health protocols relating to the operation of businesses such as limits on the number of people allowed to enter a space at the same time.

A total of 55 residents and staff have tested positive for Covid-19 in a private care home for the elderly in the northwestern Greek city of Ioannina, according to reports on Tuesday. Nine of the twenty-one staff members and 46 residents who were infected have been transferred to hospitals in other regions as the Covid-19 referral units at Ioannina’s University Hospital are full. In statements to the state-run news agency ANA-MPA, the deputy regional governor for health, Agni Nakou, said the staff in the care home had been tested between September 9 and October 16, with all tests coming back negative. The first case, a member of staff, was diagnozed on October 24 and subsequent tests on residents and staff detected a total of 55 cases.
