Update – 05/02/2021
February 5, 2021
As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 160,935. 25 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 5,903. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 249. 1,070 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 533 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 87 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.
According to research conducted on Attica’s wastewater, the viral load, or the amount of coronavirus present in the samples, has increased by 180% in the last week. Scientists from the University of Athens, where they conduct the analysis of Attica’s wastewater, believe that the viral load could reach 200% in the next few days. This is a stunning jump from the 45% increase in the viral load recorded in the country just last week.
According to Professor Nikolaos Thomaidis, who heads the team, a 200% increase in the viral load does not necessarily mean that there has been 200% surge in cases, but it does indicate that the virus is spreading rapidly in the region.
As covid-19 cases are rising in Greece, government officials will be deciding today, on possible new restricting measures. However, neither the economy nor the citizens can handle any additional restrictions, while the most promising plan is to focus, instead, on accelerating the vaccination of the public. The national vaccination committee today will also be announcing its reformed plan to complete the immunization of the Greek public sooner than expected.
