As of the latest update by the Greek authorities on Sunday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 19,842. 4 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 409. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 82. 229 new cases where announced yesterday in Greece, dropping the daily number below 200. 97 of the new cases were found in the Attica region.

Starting today and by mid-October, classes will resume at universities and higher education institutes throughout the country with strict measures in place to avoid the spread of SARS-CoV-2, including the mandatory use of masks in all areas and a mixed system of both physical and online classes, seminars and laboratories. Physical attendance with masks and the necessary social distancing will be in place for classes and labs with up to 50 participants, while lectures and other events with more than 50 students will be held remotely.

An intensive effort to track and trace the contacts of 114 cannery workers that have tested positive for the novel coronavirus was launched in the Pella region on Saturday, with 18 teams from the National Organisation for Public Health (EODY) conducting mass testing in the area, especially around the cannery in Mavrovouni, Skydra.

Tests conducted on 11 staff members working in the surgeries at KAT hospital in northern Athens who came in contact with a patient transporter who has been infected with the novel coronavirus came back negative on Saturday. The patient transporter was diagnosed on Friday. Samples were also taken from another 100 members of the hospital’s staff as part of the contact tracing process.

At least three children and an employee at a shelter run by the Smile of the Child have become infected with the novel coronavirus, the charity’s president, Kostas Giannopoulos, said on Friday. We are afraid, just as any parent would be if their child were in a difficult situation; the only difference is that our family is much bigger,” Giannopoulos said, commenting on the outbreak at the charity’s shelter in the southern Athens district of Moschato. Speaking at a press conference he called to announce the outbreak, Giannopoulos accused the National Organization for Public Health (EODY) for delaying to respond to the first case at the facility, a 17-year-old boy who spiked a fever last Sunday.

The Athens Medical Association (AMA) has warned its members that misinforming the public about the coronavirus pandemic and the measures that should be taken to guard against its spread constitutes a serious public health risk. In a statement issued on Friday, the AMA said it has already reported several members for disciplinary action over violation of medical ethics after allegedly “disseminating scientifically groundless opinions about the pandemic which put public health at risk.”

A man was issued a fine of 4,350 euros by police in Achaia in the Peloponnese on Friday after he was found to have organized an engagement party in Western Achaia with an excessive number of guests, violating health regulations that restrict numbers at such gatherings to below 50 to avert the spread of the coronavirus.
