As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece 663,433. 36 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 14,956. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 342. 2,125 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 419 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 390 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.
Greece’s Health Ministry is set to announce a new mix of measures on Wednesday that seeks to drive home the message that widespread vaccination is the only way forward and out of the pandemic.
In comments to Skai TV on Monday, Health Minister Thanos Plevris indicated that these measures may include greater freedoms for vaccinated people in indoor leisure and entertainment venues and more restrictions for the unvaccinated. Allowing concerts and other live music events but limiting access to them only to vaccinated people is, reportedly, also in the cards.
The new public health safety measures come in response to mounting frustration among vaccinated citizens over continued restrictions stemming from high transmission rates, driven mainly by the unvaccinated.
The ministry is also expected on Wednesday to announce the name of the new chief of its National Organization for Public Health (EODY).
Hundreds of DJs took to the streets of Thessaloniki on Monday to protest the ban on music in bars, cafés and restaurants due to local Covid restrictions.
DJs, waiters, assistants, bartenders and employees of related professions gathered at the White Tower under a banner stating “No music, no life.”
They called for the immediate lifting of the ban on music and for compensation for lost earnings.
Last Friday, authorities imposed a night-time curfew and ban on music at bars, cafés and restaurants in Thessaloniki following an increase in Covid-19 cases.
The DJs said it was unfair that they could not ply their trade while concerts were allowed to take place.
According to Christos Kaltsas, president of the Thessaloniki Disk Jockeys’ Association, 300 workers have lost their jobs while about 200 venues (mostly nightclubs) have been closed or have reduced turnover due to the music ban.
As Greece struggles to get its vaccination rate above 60%, an anti-vax group calling itself “Indigenous Greeks” is challenging science while lobbying against state legislation on requirements for attending public schools.
A 30-minute video posted on Facebook on August 23, a mix of misinformation, conspiracy theories and nationalist rhetoric, has racked up about 7,000 hits. The speakers challenge the mandate of the country’s political representatives and state institutions, while urging people to disobey Covid rules.
“We rule this country, we own this land,” one of them claims in the video.
Members of the group embrace QAnon conspiracy theories. Some are believed to have ties to Artemis Sorras, the founder of the ultra-nationalist fringe movement Convention of Greeks, who is serving a six-year prison sentence for attempting to defraud the state. They deny the allegation.
