Update – 05/11/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities on Wednesday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 46,892. 18 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 673. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 179. 2,646 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece, maintaining the daily number above 2,000. 588 of the new cases were found in the Attica region.

Greece is expected to become the latest European country to go into a second nationwide lockdown as of Friday, according to sources, as cases of Covid-19 have soared in recent weeks. The news comes after the National Organization for Public Health announced on Wednesday a new record number of cases. The Prime Minister’s office announced earlier on Wednesday that Kyriakos Mitsotakis will hold a televised press briefing about developments with the coronavirus in the country on Thursday. Infectious diseases professor and member of the government’s advisory committee on the virus, Sotiris Tsiodras, will participate in the briefing. The statements will be made today at noon.

A Greek misdemeanors court has given a teacher at a secondary school in the Athens suburb of Ymittos a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for three years, after finding her guilty of not wearing a face mask in her classroom, in violation of restrictions imposed by the government to curb the spread of the coronavirus. The ruling was made public on Wednesday following the teacher’s arrest on October 23 following claims by schoolchildren’s parents that she had not worn a mask in class. In her defense, the teacher told the court that she had told both the principal of the school and her pupils that she would be removing her mask frequently due to suffering from otitis – inflammation of the ears.

Many restaurant and café owners, especially in the center of Athens, have decided to keep their businesses closed, deeming that the revenues they would get from takeaway or delivery activities would not offset the cost of not being able to serve food and drinks at their establishments. This is mainly attributed to the growing number of people currently working or studying from home. However, it was a different story in the capital’s suburbs, as even restaurants that never used to provide for takeaway or delivery services have decided it’s worth a try, with many cooperating with the efood and Wolt delivery companies.

All court hearings are to be suspended between 9 a.m. and noon on Friday after the association representing Greek judges and prosecutors on Wednesday called a work stoppage to protest the government’s failure to introduce restrictions that would protect judicial functionaries, court staff and the general public amid a recent spike in coronavirus infections. The move, the association said, is “a first message of protest to the government and at the same time a small reminder that the call for each citizen to show individual responsibility must be accompanied by the social responsibility of the state.”

The Hellenic Police have stepped up inspections to check compliance with restrictions put in place to curb the spread of the coronavirus, with officers carrying out 45,617 checks on Tuesday. Officers registered 1,741 violations of a regulation stipulating the mandatory use of face masks in all public areas and 417 violations of a nighttime curfew. Since early August, 122 people have been arrested over a total of 1,222 such violations. Overall ELAS has recorded 37,609 violations of measures put in place to curb the spread of the coronavirus since early August.
