Update – 05/11/2021

corona virus

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece 767,376. 42 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 16,151. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 441. 6,808 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 1,475 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 1,117 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

The platform to book an appointment for a booster shot against Covid-19 for people over the age of 18 opens on Friday, the general secretary of primary healthcare, Marios Themistokleous said on Thursday. He said the booster shot will be given to those inoculated with the single dose Johnson & Johnson, two months after vaccination, and to those vaccinated with Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca, six months after the second dose.

Responding to whether people should be getting a booster because their vaccination certificate may at some point expire, Themistokleous said that the reason they should do so is to protect themselves. The issue is scientific, he said. Regarding mandatory vaccination, Themistokleous has insisted that its expansion to other groups of workers, besides those involved in healthcare, will not have a significant impact and could create management problems related to work suspensions.

Greece has seen a significant worsening of its epidemiological load, with the number of new Covid-19 cases jumping by 60% in the last 15 days, an infectious disease expert said on Thursday, adding that there is increasing incidence of Covid transmission in the workplace.

Vana Papaevangelou, a pediatrician and infectious disease expert on the committee advising the government on coronavirus policy, added that there was a rolling average of 4,621 new cases per day.

The positivity rate has increased gradually and steadily, almost doubling from 1.09-1.1% at the beginning of the month to 1.96% last week, although the weekly number of laboratory tests remained stable.

Papaevangelou said the expansion of the 4th wave is obvious, with active cases exceeding 35,000. The pressure on the health system was significant, with an increase in admissions of 35% in the last two weeks.

There were now 3,000 patients hospitalized in the country due to coronavirus. Some 70% of the patients are over 55 years old and in the last two weeks both the number of intubated patients – which now exceeds 400 – and Covid fatalities due to coronavirus have increased.

Papaevangelou noted that while family and social contacts account for many cases, there is an increasing incidence of Covid transmission in the workplace.

In terms of age group, the 35-55 demographic accounts for 30% of all cases.

She called on the public to avail of the offer of vaccine booster shots and to adhere to the government’s measures.

As Greece recorded a new high of 6,808 confirmed coronavirus cases Thursday, Health Minister Thanos Plevris called for an investigation into reports that some gynecologists are discouraging pregnant women from getting vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2.

In a letter, Plevris asked the Panhellenic Medical Association to examine the relevant complaints, “and to judge whether such medical advice contradicts the rules of medical science and endangers the health of patients.”

For its part, the association noted that it assists the local medical associations that have the authority to investigate such complaints and will ensure that action is taken in proven cases.

The minister’s call came in the wake of several cases of pregnant women with severe Covid-19, including a 40-year-old nurse who was in intensive care at the University Hospital of Larissa in central Greece Thursday, and a 38-year-old who died of Covid-19 a few days ago in the northern port city of Thessaloniki. According to the latter’s mother, she had not been vaccinated on the recommendation of her doctor.

If this claim is confirmed, then it contradicts the instructions of Greece’s competent scientific bodies, including the Hellenic Obstetrics and Gynecology Society which has issued guidelines based on which the vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 is recommended for all pregnant women.
