Update – 07/09/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities yesterday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 11524. 4 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 284. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 41. 144 cases where announced yesterday in Greece, dropping the daily number of cases below 200. 51 of the new cases were found in the Attica region.

Although the latest numbers are well off recent highs, when the number of new daily cases reached nearly 300, authorities are stepping up controls and fines for people not wearing masks in closed spaces or not keeping social distancing. The government considers the reopening of schools on Monday, Sept. 14, as its next big challenge. The country’s Public Health Authority has published detailed instructions, separate for primary, junior high and high schools, about taking precautions, keeping students apart and what to do about suspected cases.

The focus of a scheduled debate in Parliament Monday is to be the pandemic due to the concern about the significant increase in coronavirus infections over the past month. The discussion, which was initially proposed by the leader of the center-left Movement for Change (KINAL), Fofi Gennimata, is expected to result in a vehement debate, culminating in a clash between party leaders about the government’s management of the health crisis. The government is expected to defend its decision to relax restrictions and then open the country’s borders to tourism in the summer in a bid to bolster the economy to the greatest extent possible. In any case, imported infections are still low, about 10% of the total. Infectious disease experts say the latest spike has chiefly been fueled by increased complacency on the part of many citizens and businesses.

The Culture Ministry has launched a series of fabric face masks featuring designs inspired by Greece’s ancient cultural heritage. “The Covid-19 pandemic brought protective face masks into our lives,” the ministry said on its website. “No one can say with certainty how much longer we will need to wear them but they needn’t have a clinical image.” The masks cost 5 euros apiece and are available at museums and archaeological sites.
