Update – 08/01/2021

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 142,777. 47 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 5,146. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 391. 510 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 187 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 65 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

The consequences of the holiday period in the spread of Covid-19 are yet to be observed. Health experts are expecting the results in the following days. Attiki region is showing a rise in detected cases and there are worries that due to social gatherings in the past few days, that number will rise even more.

Today, Health officials in the ministry of Health, will be discussing the possible reopening of stores with the click-away method, hairdresser’s salons, nail spas.

Worries arise, as the new covid-19 mutation is spreading across countries. The WHO’s Regional Director for Europe, Dr Hans Kluge has announced that extended protection measures should be taken by countries in order to minimize the spread and the negative consequences in the already burdened health system.

As the vaccination process is under way, there have been a few cases of patients having an allergic reaction to the vaccine. All patients have recovered. A severe allergic reaction is highly rare as health officials say, while approximately one is observed, in every 100.000 cases. This was inferred after evidence came out from 1,9 million vaccinations administered (up until 23 of December 2020), 21 people had an allergic reaction. 17 of those patients had similar reactions to other medicine and vaccines, food or insect bites in the past.

Health officials stress the importance of the vaccination of the public.

However, people with a history of allergies should be observed closely within 15-30 minutes of having received the vaccine. If an allergy occurs, the patient must not receive the second dose.

CureVac and Bayer two pharmaceutical companies, have signed their collaboration to produce a vaccine against covid-19.
