Update – 08/06/2021

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 410,166. 24 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 12,301. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 392. 808 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 396 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 75 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

Greeks aged 25 to 29 will soon be eligible to receive the Covid-19 vaccine, as the country plans to open up vaccination appointments to the age group on Thursday.

Marios Themistokleous, Greek Secretary General for Primary Health Care, announced this next step in Greece’s vaccination campaign, called “Eleftheria,” or “Freedom,” during a press conference on Monday.

Young Greeks who are 25 to 29 years of age will have the option to receive the Pfizer, Moderna, or Johnson and Johnson shots, but not the vaccine from AstraZeneca, Themistokleous stated.

While no dates have been announced yet, those aged 18-24 will be next in line for the vaccine in Greece.

He noted that there has been great demand to receive the shot in Greece, and that vaccine appointments for Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson and Johnson shots in Attica are nearly 100% booked.

One Greek hospital’s ICU mortality rate is almost 100 percent, according to a report released by the hospital workers union POEDIN on Thursday.

Agrinio Hospital, in western Greece, has an ICU with a five bed capacity which has been treating severe COVID-19 cases since October 2020. POEDIN figures attest to 35 out of 40 total ICU patients having passed away while receiving treatment at the hospital.

However, the Greek hospital’s ICU scandal deepened over the course of last week. Media reported on Friday that from a total of 41 patients which had been hospitalized in the Covid-ICU of the hospital, 40 had passed away, with the most recent tragic death having occurred that very morning.

This new information brings Agrinio Hospital’s mortality rate close to 100 percent in their coronavirus ICU treatment wing. The scandal led to the forced resignation of the hospital’s president on Saturday.

Greek authorities have released an interactive map showing Covid-19 infection rates as well as the spread of vaccinations across the country’s regions.

The epidemiological map, which is also available in English here, will be updated on a weekly basis.
