Update – 08/09/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities yesterday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 11663. 5 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 289. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 41.

156 cases where announced yesterday in Greece, maintaining the daily number of cases below 200 for a second consequent day. 101 of the new cases were found in the Attica region.

Although the latest numbers of confirmed cases in the country showed a drop, authorities are stepping up checks and fining those not wearing masks in closed spaces.

According to reports, Greece’s upcoming challenge will be the reopening of schools on September 14.

Instructions for the reopening of schools have been released by Greece’s National Public Health Organization (EODY) and include mandatory mask wearing by students and teachers when in the classroom and separate break time for students in order for them to avoid close contact with each other.

Professor Charalambos Gogos, member of the Greek Health Ministry’s committee of health experts, gave different scenarios for the evolution of the Coronavirus in the winter. According to the professor, the first scenario sees a second large wave, even larger than in March and then a complete attenuation of the virus. The second scenario is for there to be many small, continuous waves in the country, while the third scenario will be continuous waves of the virus, one smaller than the other, which should end by 2021.

In order to deal with the consequences of the pandemic, finance Minister Christos Staikouras announced that the government will disburse around 10 billion euros in the domestic market in the next few months. Speaking to radio station Real FM, he warned however that “the longer the crisis lasts on a global, European and national level, the more difficult the task will be to achieve the goals of the previous period in such a short period of time.” Staikouras said that the economic recession in Greece does not have the intensity of that in other countries and that the Greek economy had solid foundations that kept the economy going in the past few months.
