Update – 08/11/2021

corona virus

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece 784,904. 52 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 16,295. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 470. 4,307 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 902 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 766 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

The authorities conducted 90,882 checks and inspections all over Greece on Saturday to enforce the new measures put in place to manage the increasing rate of coronavirus infections.

The checks resulted in 11 arrests, 594 violation fines, and 23 stores were shut down.

Queues formed outside shops in Athens on Saturday on the first day of new restrictions to curb soaring coronavirus infections which require the unvaccinated to have negative Covid-19 tests.

Covid-19 infections in Greece hit a new daily high almost every day in November, prompting authorities to announce new measures on Tuesday, which also restrict access to cafes and restaurants, state services and banks to those who are either vaccinated or have a negative test.

Those vaccinated against Covid-19 also have to present their vaccination certificates, triggering long lines outside shops in the capital’s busiest shopping street, Ermou.

“I don’t like it,” said Soula Tsaousi as she waited in line outside a clothes shop in central Athens. “We don’t live in a jail, we’re civilized human beings and I don’t like it at all.”

Greece reported 6,909 new coronavirus infections on Friday, breaking a previous single-day record of 6,808 recorded on Thursday. This took the total infections to 774,265 since the pandemic began last year. Some 16,200 death people have died. Some Greeks were in favour of the new rules.

“They will be effective as long as they are implemented correctly and by all,” said Giorgos, a customer in a cafe who declined to give his last name. “I think they were late in coming too, they should have implemented these measures a lot sooner.”

As part of the new measures, all unvaccinated workers should also test negative twice a week. Most unvaccinated in Greece are now required to present a negative test once a week to get to their workplace.

About 60.5.% of a population of about 11 million are fully vaccinated against Covid-19, according to the latest data.

Health Minister Thanos Plevris said Greece will soon send letters and text messages as part of a new campaign to boost vaccination take up.

The head of the union representing restaurateurs and other related businesses is reportedly meeting with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday to convey the dismay of professionals in the sector over the new coronavirus safety measures.

“The government is using our sector as leverage to pressure the unvaccinated, but it is not supporting businesses so they can survive,” POEET chief Giorgos Kavvathas told Athens 98.4 radio on Friday, announcing Monday’s meeting.

Anger at the new measures – which require a negative Covid test from all unvaccinated patrons at catering and leisure establishments – has also prompted a shutdown of all eateries, cafes and bars today in the western port city of Patra and other parts of the Achaia region.

Similarly, hairdressers across Greece are closing shop today in protest at the testing requirements, which they see as harming business.

A well-known club in central Athens was shut down during the early hours of Sunday morning as inspections identified several patrons as not having a vaccination or recovery certificate.

This was the third offense for the club in the span of a few days and it has had its operating license revoked for 60 days.
