Update – 09/07/2021

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 433.021. 10 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 12.773. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 153. 2.107 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 1.115 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 74 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

Greek Deputy Minister for Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias said on Thursday he strongly recommends travelers take a self-test before returning from their holidays on the islands or the mainland but did not impose additional requirements for testing, as recommended by the experts advising the government on the pandemic.

“For land travel there is no obligatory measure. There is a strong recommendation to do self-tests,” Hardalias said at a regular press briefing on the coronavirus.

The existing rules dictate that people traveling between regions or to the islands need to display one of the following documents: a Covid-19 vaccination certificate, proof of recent recovery from the virus, a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of departure or a negative rapid test conducted 42 hours before traveling.

Travelers who are 12 or older are advised to take a self-test before their return trip.

The committee of experts recommended additional tests for travelers and unvaccinated employees in all forms of transport, following a spike in new infections in Greece in recent days.

It also proposed making rapid tests compulsory for unvaccinated employees working in ferries, airlines and public land transport.

A decision on whether vaccination against Covid-19 will become mandatory for specific professional groups will be announced next week, government spokeswoman Aristotelia Peloni told a news briefing on Thursday.

She said the decision will be based on the recommendations of the National Bioethics Committee.

Furthermore, Peloni said that the government will early next week provide details on restrictions for indoor leisure activities, including dining, which will be allowed from July 15.

Following a spike in infections, Greek authorities reimposed curbs on restaurants, nightclubs and bars this week, with effect from Thursday. No standing customers will be allowed.

Amid growing concern over the downward trend in daily vaccinations, a poll by Pulse on behalf of Skai TV released on Wednesday showed that among those who have not yet received a shot, 40 percent said they never intend to get one while 24 percent said they would at a much later date.

Adult spectators may soon return to stadiums to watch games as long as they are vaccinated and all wear masks without exception, the Sports Ministry revealed on Thursday.

Minors who are not eligible for vaccination may also attend, as long as their numbers do not exceed 5% of the venue’s permissible capacity.

Following the approval of the national health committee, adult spectators will be obliged to show a vaccination certificate when purchasing an electronic ticket, while minors be required to show a negative PCR or rapid test result.

At facilities without an electronic ticketing system, proof of vaccination or test results will be required at the door.

Open-air facilities may reopen at 80% capacity (or a maximum 25,000 people) while closed facilities may seat up to 60% capacity (or a maximum 3,000 people).

A further announced in the coming days will reveal when the new measures go into effect.

In addition, the committee approved a health protocol for the Athens Half Marathon (12 September) on the condition that only fully vaccinated athletes be allowed register.
