Thousands of migrants fled the Moria camp under COVID-19 lockdown after multiple fires gutted much of the site on the Greek island of Lesvos. Around 12,500 people were living at the camp and the surrounding area, where additional restrictions have been imposed over the past week after a Somali resident tested positive for the coronavirus. The fires broke out overnight, police and fire officials on the island told The Associated Press, adding the cause of the blazes, as well as the full extent of the damage, remained unclear. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called for an emergency ministerial meeting this morning to discuss the situation in the migrant camp that was destroyed overnight due to the fire. The meeting will focus on measures that need to be taken.

Restaurant owners across the country say they will keep their businesses closed for a week (September 16-22) in an act of protest against the government’s Covid-19 restrictions applied locally in a number of Greek destinations.

The restrictions, which include a curfew and a limit of four people at restaurant or café tables, since August have been imposed in the cities of Athens, Thessaloniki and a number of popular Greek destinations such as Heraklion and Chania on Crete, Zakynthos, Lesvos, Halkidiki, Mykonos, Paros and Antiparos.

Regarding the opening to the tourism, Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that the government did not hastily open its tourism market in the post-Covid-19 era, but did so gradually and in an orderly way. “We opened to tourism when we were ready with a system for controlling and tracking incoming flows. We have created an innovative system,” the PM said, referring to the PLF forms. “Other countries have requested to copy and use the system that we followed to take action,” Mitsotakis said, also referring to targeted tests at entry points, identifying coronavirus cases in a timely manner and containing the pandemic by taking local measures.

European Union lawmakers have cancelled their session at the parliament’s headquarters in the French city of Strasbourg next week, despite a legal obligation to do so, because of the coronavirus, the assembly’s president said on Tuesday. Many EU lawmakers were concerned that moving the 705 members of the European Parliament, their staff and interpreters – more than 1,500 people – from Belgium to the eastern French city was an unnecessary health risk.
