Update – 09/10/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities on Thursday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 21,381. 6 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 430. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 92. 436 new cases where announced yesterday in Greece, maintaining the daily number above 400. 219 of the new cases were found in the Attica region.

More than 700 people are being treated for coronavirus in the country’s hospitals, with 92 of them in need of treatment in Intensive Care Units. It is worth noting that although the number is not considered large, at the same time it shows an increasing trend. If this trend continues, then there will be a strong issue in the ability of the National Health System to cope and there must be an immediate response to the need for new ICU beds. According to Ms. Anastasia Kotanidou, professor of pulmonology and intensive care at EKPA, if there is a “broken” limit of 100 patients in the ICU and it moves to 150, then there will be a particularly big issue in the NHS.

Attica remains at the centre of the coronavirus surge in Greece, a fact that is very alarming for the government, which is ready to announce new measures. Among the measures that might even be announced today, is the further reduction of the opening hours for restaurants, which will from now on will be closed from 10pm to 5am, as well as the mandatory use of face mask indoors and outdoors in public spaces.

Vassilis Kikilias, the Greek Minister of Health, while speaking on a TV interview he stated that a regional lockdown will be the last resort for Attica, but the government doesn’t want to opt for a horizontal lockdown.
