As of the latest update by the Greek authorities yesterday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 5,623. A daily record 203 new coronavirus cases were announced on Sunday, representing a 3.7% surge in cases in just one day. 1 new death was reported raising the total number to 212. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 22 – up from 14 in Friday.  

Sunday’s data, following Saturday’s 152 new cases and 1 death, and Friday’s 151 new cases, are generating great concern to the authorities that will probably soon announce new strict measures, as the country is near a high demand period for internal tourism.

The Saronic island of Poros went into lockdown on Friday due to a spike in Coronavirus cases, with 13 people being diagnosed with the virus. The measures include a curfew shutting down all businesses from 11 p.m. until 7 a.m. the following day, a ban on public and private gatherings of any kind involving more than nine people, the suspensions of farmers’ markets, villages festivals and other such public gatherings, as well as a cap of four (or six if they belong to the same household) on the number of people allowed to sit at the same cafe or restaurant table.

50 workers at an olive factory in the Chalkidiki area, in northern Greece, have tested positive for Covid-19, according to the reports on Sunday.


Regarding yesterday’s cases:

  • 29 were detected during the tests carried out at Greece’s entry points
  • 4 are imported cases, which requested testing voluntarily
  • 38 cases were detected in the regional unit of Attica, 10 of which reported close contact with a confirmed case and 3 had a travelling history in areas with confirmed cases  
  • 35 cases were detected in the regional unit of Thessaloniki,
  • 50 cases were detected in the regional unit of Chalkidiki, connected to the olive factory
  • 2 cases were detected in the regional unit of Argolida
  • 1 case was detected in the regional unit of Viotia
  • 1 case was detected in the regional unit of Drama
  • 3 cases were detected in the regional unit of Dodekanisos
  • 7 cases were detected in the regional unit of Kerkyra
  • 2 cases were detected in the regional unit of Heraklion in Crete
  • 2 cases were detected in the regional unit of Kavala
  • 1 case was detected in the regional unit of Kastoria
  • 1 case was detected in the regional unit of Magnesia
  • 2 cases were detected in the regional unit of Korinthia
  • 3 cases were detected in the regional unit of Cyclades
  • 8 cases were detected in the regional unit of Larissa
  • 1 case was detected in the regional unit of Xanthi
  • 1 case was detected in the regional unit of Pella
  • 2 cases were detected in the regional unit of Pieria
  • 5 cases were detected in the regional unit of Rodopi
  • 3 cases were detected in the regional unit of Serres
  • 2 cases were detected in the regional unit of Trikala

MEASURES/RESTRICTIONS

  • On Friday, Nikos Hardalias, the Deputy Minister for Civil Protection and Crisis Management, announced that all activities, including religious services, for the August 15 Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a major festival time in Greece, will be cancelled this year out of an abundance of caution.
  • In addition, citizens of the island nation of Malta will be banned from entering the country from this point on unless they can prove a negative virus result (PCR) in a test which must have been taken up to 72 hours before their arrival in Greece..
  • Mr. Hardalias also announced that the ban on standing in bars, nightclubs, music venues and the like will be extended until August 31. He also stated that from this point onward, all the summer bazaars in the country will be banned until further notice.
