Update – 10/09/2021

corona virus

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece 609,519. 43 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 14,060. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 384. 2,170 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 561 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 256 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

Evrytania in Central Greece and Argolida in the Peloponnese have become the latest regional units to be slapped with a mini-lockdown by civil protection authorities to stem the spread of Covid-19.

The restrictions will go into effect at 6 a.m. on Friday and will be reviewed on September 16 depending on the course of coronavirus cases.

All movement in the regional units will be banned between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. except for medical emergencies and work, while music is not allowed at clubs, bars and cafés to prevent overcrowding.

Parties and other gatherings of more than 20 people are also forbidden, both in private and public setting, with the fines for violating this restriction ranging from 50,000 to 200,000 euros.

The Civil Protection authority also announced that existing restrictions imposed on the regional units of Iraklio, Achaea, Messinia, as well as the municipality of Ikaria, will remain in force.

Just past the midpoint of its four-year term, the government faces three significant challenges: keeping schools open, avoiding further lockdowns and keeping inflation at bay.

Not managing even one of the three challenges effectively risks the government’s standing with the voters who, so far, have given it their confidence if not wholehearted approval through a series of crises – the pandemic, the fires – but may not be so forgiving in case of a slip-up.

A government official told Kathimerini that keeping schools open is a crucial challenge because it affects the functioning of families and any emergency creates social anxiety. Hence the decision to allow pediatricians to vaccinate minors aged 12-17.

“We must make sure schools will not shut down,” an official said, adding that isolated cases should be resolved immediately, before the problem becomes widespread.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has emphatically rejected the likelihood of further lockdowns, and not only because society will not tolerate them; there is almost no fiscal margin for the sort of generous subsidies that kept the economy from collapsing. If there is a further rise in Covid cases or if hospitals come under pressure from rising numbers of people requiring intubation, the government may resort to draconian measures against the unvaccinated, who are enough to provide a budding political movement with the impetus it needs.

The continued spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus has spawned a Greek alphabet of variants – a naming system used by the World Health Organization (WHO) to track concerning new mutations of the virus that causes Covid-19. Some have equipped the virus with better ways of infecting humans or evading vaccine protection.

Scientists remain focused on Delta, now the dominant variant around the world, but are tracking others to see what may one day take its place.
