As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 144,738. 36 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 5,146. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 353. 445 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 172 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 75 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.
Professor of University of Ioannina, pathologist, specializing in infections, said in his recent interview, that the vaccines provide significantly higher percentage of immunization, in comparison with that caused by being infected with the virus. He, too, confirmed health officials’ frequent mentions about the vaccines’ efficiency and safety, referring to higher funds, international collaboration and the cancellation of bureaucracy to having the vaccines ready for administration in such a novel short amount of time.
Today, the platform emvolio.gov.gr will officially open (18:00 in the evening) for the public above 85 years old, who wish to book an appointment to receive the vaccine. Alternatively, they may book it through a pharmacy or the nearest KEP department. 100.000 people are the first to receive the dose. 60.000 who have signed up for intangible prescription, will receive an SMS with their appointment, while the rest 40.000 will have to book it through the platform or other means.
Today, in Greece, elementary schools are reopening. Health officials, regarding recent data of detected cases, approved the reopening of schools. However, after checking the progression of cases, as the aftermath of the Holiday season, and if the situation gets out of hand, the operation of schools will be reevaluated. Health officials say that the virus is not spreading among youngsters, but they are worried this might happen while parents and children transport to and gather outside schools.
Mr Exadaktilos, president of Hellenic Medicine Association, expressed his opposition to the reopening of schools. He said that such act was not a priority, comparing to the operation of stores. The market should have been the first to open, he said.
