Update – 11/08/2021

corona virus

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece 521,399. 19 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 13,118. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 219. 4,181 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 1,238 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 337 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

There will be new, more stringent coronavirus restrictions for Heraklion, Crete per an announcement from the Greek government on Tuesday.

Heraklion is the capital of Crete and the fourth largest city in Greece.

According to a statement issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection of Greece, a nighttime curfew will be in place beginning at 6 AM Wednesday, August 11 until Tuesday, August 17.

According to the announcement, all people in Heraklion, including residents and visitors, will be barred from being able to leave their houses or hotel rooms beginning at 11:00 PM until 6:00 AM the following morning. The only exceptions to this nighttime curfew will be for those who wish to go to and return from work or in case of a medical emergency.

Additionally, music will be banned in every public venue in Heraklion.

It is also noted that organized private events, such as parties with more than 20 people in private, non-professional venues are also banned, with fines being exceptionally stiff. This particular ban applies to the entirety of Greece — not just these two specific regions.

”The administrative fine in case of violation amounts from 50,000 to 200,000 euros,” the Civil Protection of Greece reminded citizens.

The exact same type of restrictions were imposed earlier this month on the islands of Zakynthos and the city of Chania, Crete. Earlier this summer, similar restrictions had also been imposed on the popular island destination of Mykonos, putting a damper on the social life of the island.
