Update – 11/09/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities yesterday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 12.452. 4 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 297. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 49.

372 new coronavirus infections were reported on Thursday, the highest daily tally since the start of the pandemic. Of the 372 new cases, 94 concern outbreaks at food processing plants in Pella, Kastoria, Imathia and Pieria. Attica accounted for 133 of the new cases followed by Pella with 70, with 21 people testing positive at the country’s borders.

Deputy Minister for Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias announced stricter restrictions for public gatherings and bar and restaurant opening hours in the northern regions of Imathia, Kilkis, Pella and Pieria for two weeks from today. All bars, cafes, and restaurants must be closed from midnight until 7 am in these areas beginning today. When these establishments are open, only four people can sit together at one table. If the group is made up of close relatives, however, six people can sit together.

Despite the rise in infections, a protest movement by parents and others who object to the mandatory use of face masks in schools, which reopen next week, is in full force. Some parents have sent injunctions to teachers, demanding assurances that masks will not pose a health risk for their children. A prosecutor is investigating whether those people should face charges of violating measures aimed at averting the spread of disease and incitement to disobedience.

Harry Theoharis, the Tourism Minister of Greece, described the decision taken by the government of Great Britain to include seven of the most popular Greek islands on a new quarantine list as “very unfortunate.” According to the ruling, all those returning to Great Britain will be obliged to quarantine fora a total of fourteen days upon their arrival back home.
