Update – 11/10/2021

corona virus

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece 676,799. 30 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 15,042. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 333. 1,358 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 261 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 236 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

Passenger rides on the Athens metro are 45% down on last year, as the public appears concerned about crowding.

Nikos Heretas, CEO of STASY, the urban rail transport company, says that the company disinfects all trains daily, keeps windows open and all stations air conditioned to keep the air flow going.

But, while passengers comply with the mask requirements, distancing is close to impossible to enforce. Passengers often use seats marked not for use, while standing room is often crowded, too.

The online platform for booking an appointment for a Covid vaccination booster shot went online on Sunday for people with underlying health conditions and those over 50. A requirement for people to qualify for the booster shot, except for immunosuppressed individuals, is that six months must have elapsed since their latest shot. It should be noted that there will be no SMS reminder to those who qualify.

This third Covid vaccination dose is highly recommended by Greek health authorities but will not be mandatory. Those who have completed a previous vaccination course, whether double or single dose, will still be considered fully vaccinated.

Currently, the health authorities are using the Pfizer mRNA vaccine for third dose vaccinations, identical to the one used in the general vaccination program.

The third dose has already been made available to people over 60, immunosuppressed individuals, residents of care homes, and health workers.

With several restrictions for vaccinated people, notably on dining out and entertainment, relaxed from Saturday, authorities are trying to convince the unvaccinated to set aside their concerns and fears.

Starting this week, mobile Covid-19 vaccination units will go to villages in areas where coverage is still low, all in northern Greece and specifically in the regional units of Florina, Pella, Pieria, Kilkis, Serres, Drama and Xanthi.

Vaccination coverage for the general population is 62%, but one in four residents aged over 80 remains unvaccinated. By comparison, 100% of this age group in Spain and Portugal, and over 97% in Italy, are vaccinated.
