Update – 12/01/2021

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 145,179. 39 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 5,302. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 350. 444 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 180 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 56 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

Yesterday began the vaccination process of people above 85 years old in Greece.

In Voiotia, a strict lockdown will be implemented today, until 18th of January.

In Attiki, due to the high number of confirmed covid-19 cases, there is the possibility of an extend of the lockdown.

Greek Prime minister Mr Mitsotakis proposed the introduction of a common vaccination certificate for all EU countries, in order for passengers, who have received the vaccine, to travel freely. Although vaccination will not be compulsory, the certificate will provide an incentive for people to undergo it.

Government spokesman Mr Tarantilis said that according to the government’s vaccination plan, 70% of Greeks will have received the vaccine, by the summer of 2021, resulting in the immunization of society.

Pharmacists are protesting, because they have been excluded from the first group of people to receive the vaccine.

Associate professor of epidemiology and preventive medicine at Athens University, Mr. Paraskevis said that despite the “societal fatigue” after a 2 month lockdown, restrictions will continue during winter in order to save the rest of the year and promote both society’s growth and immunization of the public.

Health official and professor of pathology in the University of Patras, Mr. Gogos said there will be a third wave of the virus concerning Greece. If the lockdown ends, there is a possibility of rising cases resulting in a third wave, which in turn can lead to new restrictions. He also said that schools do not pose a significant threat as the virus rarely infects youngsters. As for the click away method, he said it partly caused a rise in cases. He concluded that people need to stick to protection measures as to avoid a stricter lockdown.
