Update – 12.11.2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities on Wednesday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 63,321. 43 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 909. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 297. 2,752 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece, raising the daily number close to 3,000. 635 of the new cases were found in the Attica region.

The Greek government announced on Wednesday a nationwide curfew that will come into effect on Friday, in a bid to stem the continuing rise in infections and deaths. Deputy Civil Protection Minister Nikos Hardalias said the curfew will apply from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. and will only exclude people who need to leave the house for work, health reasons or a short walk with a pet. The restrictions came after Greek health authorities announced a record-breaking 43 new deaths on Wednesday and 2,752 new infections, 635 of which were detected in the region of Attica and 777 in Thessaloniki. Those who want to leave their home after 9 p.m. will have to send an SMS to 13033, or have a document from their employer.

In response to what appears to be an uncontrollable surge in coronavirus cases, health authorities in the northern port city of Thessaloniki are in a state of emergency as the average daily rate of infections exceeds 500, with the curve showing no signs of flattening. According to the mathematical models of Aristotle University professor Dimosthenis Sarigiannis, in just one week and in the midst of the lockdown, active cases in Thessaloniki increased by 40%, from 40,000 to 60,000, with the reproduction number climbing to 1.8 and daily tests showing that 32% of those tested were positive for the virus.

Archbishop Anastasios of Albania was airlifted from Tirana to Athens on Wednesday after testing positive for the novel coronavirus. The 91-year-old cleric has been admitted to the Greek capital’s Evangelismos Hospital with symptoms that are being described as mild, after being flown to Greece in a military transport plane. Speaking to the media after his diagnosis was made public earlier on Wednesday, Anastasios admitted to having had asthma for several years, but said he was confident he would pull through. He also underwent heart surgery in June.

Stricter lockdown measures than those in force in the rest of Greece are reportedly being mulled by the government for Thessaloniki after health authorities reported that the positive coronavirus test rate in the northern port city has reached 32%. According to government sources, the additional measures being mulled include shutting down elementary schools and imposing a strict curfew from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.

An additional 50 ICU beds will be made available in northern Greek hospitals for the treatment of Covid-19 patients between now and Sunday, Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias announced after a meeting on Wednesday with the heads of local health districts. Specifically, six ICU beds will be added at AHEPA hospital, seven at Xanthi General Hospital, five at the University Hospital of Alexandroupolis, five at Serres Hospital, 15 at Ippokratio hospital in Thessaloniki, six at Giannitsa hospital and five at Gennimatas Hospital. Kikilias also announced that all health districts will be able to transfer cases to neighbouring ones, if the need arises. The minister said that 25 patients were intubated at AHEPA hospital over the last day and 86 Covid-19 patients were admitted.

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias went into quarantine on Wednesday after being informed that a person he had met with has tested positive for the novel coronavirus. The decision to go into self-isolation was a “precaution,” the Foreign Ministry said in its announcement.

In the wake of warnings from the Federation of Prison Workers that at least 16 of Greece’s 24 penitentiaries are dealing with Covid-19 outbreaks, the Health Ministry yesterday announced measures to contain the spread of the virus among inmates and staff. The National Organization of Public Health (EODY) will begin a widespread testing program at Greece’s prisons by sending a mobile using to Diavata on the outskirts of Thessaloniki, which has reported dozens of infections in recent days. Tests will also be carried out on all prison workers on a weekly basis, while the priority for inmate testing will be facilities already dealing with outbreaks. Two hospitals in the Greek capital will also be designated to host special wards for inmates who require additional care to what can be provided by prison infirmaries, which will be bolstered with material from their regional health authorities.
