As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 146,020. 27 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 5,329. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 337. 866 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 364 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 99 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

Vaccinations in Greece will also proceed in hospitals, apart from the 1.018 vaccination points. Hospitals can support cases of allergic reactions to the vaccine.

As of yesterday, Moderna’s vaccine has arrived in Greece. AstraZeneca’s vaccine in collaboration with the University of Oxford, has filed for approval with the EMA. The decision will be known until January the 29th.

A strict lockdown is imposed in the island of Lesvos, until the 18th of January.

Epidemiologists are worried of a third wave of Covid-19 virus appearing in Greece. They expect a rising number of cases detected, over the next few weeks. This is due to 3 causes. First, a lot of Greek citizens are not following the health measures. Secondly, the weather, as the temperature will drop, in the following weeks. Thirdly, excessive mobility of people.

Yesterday, the 12th of January, prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis sent a letter to the EU Commission Mrs. Von Der Leyen, and other countries’ presidents, that a health certificate should be distributed to citizens having received the vaccine. The certificate will be mandatory for free travel in and outside the EU. Mr. Mitsotakis stressed that all EU members should cooperate in the creation of a common certificate.

The Greek Prime minister announced further financial support to business owners, and a funding program to help with the repayment of loans.

He assured that vaccinations will have resulted in a positive percentage of the population by summer, to save the tourism season.
