Update – 13/01/2022

corona virus

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece 1,592,460. 77 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 21,637. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 670. 24,246 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 9,347 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 2,392 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

The Greek Health Ministry announced Wednesday it is extending existing restrictions imposed to halt the wave of Covid-19 infections by one week, to Jan. 23, as expected.

The announcement followed a recommendation by the panel of experts advising the government on the virus.

The measures currently in place were announced in late December and introduced on January 3rd. They include a closing time of midnight for all entertainment venues, while standing customers are not allowed and a maximum of six people may share a table. Half of employees in the public and public sectors will have to work from home and people will have to wear increased protection facemasks (KN95/FFP2) or double masks in supermarkets and public transport.

The were expexted to expire on Jan. 16.

Greece’s National Vaccination Committee Tuesday approved the administration of a fourth dose of a coronavirus vaccine to immunocompromised people.

The experts decided that this group will be able to get a fourth jab 3-6 months after the third.

The decision concerns patients with hematological and oncological illnesses who are under treatment, people receiving immunosuppressive drugs, transplant recipients and patients with rheumatic diseases or renal failure.

At present, and with the current epidemiological data, the administration of a fourth dose to the general population does not appear to be on the cards.

The chairwoman of the national vaccination committee, Maria Theodoridou, cited a recent report by the UK’s Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization that reviewed all the data and concluded that the third dose offers very good protection against serious disease. Priority, she said, is given to the third dose vaccination by all countries, including the US. The administration of the fourth dose is something for the future, and hinges on both epidemiological and clinical data, she noted.

Meanwhile the surge of the Omicon variant in Greece seems to have “slowed down,” according to health authorities Tuesday, which confirmed 32,694 new cases in a total of 583,206 tests (positivity 5.6%).

New deaths of patients with Covid-19 came to 80, while the number of patients being treated by intubation was 640.

Hospital admissions of new patients stood at 497. According to the National Public Health Organization (EODY), the hospitalization time of patients infected by Omicron is five days. What’s more, 50% of hospital admissions concern Omicron. The other 50% of patients are infected with the Delta variant, which, despite appearing to be on the retreat, is still causing many hospitalizations.

Four in five Greeks have been inoculated against the coronavirus or have booked a vaccination appointment, according to a public survey published Wednesday, which also found that resistance to vaccination is mainly political.

According to the survey, which was conducted by the firm Focus Bari for YouGov.gr from December 21-31 on a sample of 1002 people aged between 18 and 74, 83 percent said they have already received the jab against Covid-19. Eight percent said they might get vaccinated, whereas nine percent said they will probably/definitely not get vaccinated.

The survey found that vaccine hesitancy is highest among those under the age of 44.

According to the poll, 65 percent of vaccine deniers said they refuse to get the shot because they feel that they are being forced to do so. Fifty-seven percent said the vaccine is still in an experimental phase, while 43 percent said they are concerned over the long-term side effects. Twenty-one percent said the pandemic is “fabricated.”

An impressive mural dedicated to the doctors and nurses on the front lines of the battle against the pandemic adorns a wall at the Tzaneio Hospital in Piraeus. The mural, depicting a health worker holding a white rose, was created at the initiative of the hospital administration. It is located in the auxiliary building on Afentouli and Zanni streets. Similar artworks adorn other hospitals around Greece. The AHEPA Hospital in Thessaloniki has a large mural on its facade depicting an overworked nurse with a mask, next to a message reading “Thank you.”
