Update – 13/08/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities yesterday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 6,177. 2 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 216. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 24.

There were 262 new infections detected across the country, representing a new record high number of cases. The new data show another worrying trend: The average age of the cases is constantly declining. Greek scientists warn that the country is now facing a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic as cases have spiked in August, especially among the younger generation.

Health Minister Vasilis Kikilias noted earlier in the week that the average age of those who became ill in August has dropped to 36 years. This happened because younger people think they are “invulnerable,” and are failing to adhere to the safety precautions, he noted.

A total of 35 residents of a nursing home in Asvestochori, outside Greece’s second city of Thessaloniki, have now tested positive for the coronavirus. Three employees of the facility were also found to be positive.

A 27-year-old surgeon who suffers from Covid-19 is currently being treated in an ICU in a hospital in Larissa. The young doctor reportedly exhibited symptoms of Covid-19 after returning from a vacation in Halkidiki. She was then placed under quarantine at home. However, her condition worsened, and she was then transported to the University Hospital of Larissa.
