As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece 528,474. 20 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 13,158. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 240. 3,605 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 938 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 298 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.
The Delta variant of Covid-19 has become the dominant strain in Greece, accounting for 79.1 percent of new cases, said Charalambos Gogos, an infectious disease specialist and member of the Covid-19 Committee of Experts.
Gogos told a press briefing that it will soon reach 90 percent, which is faster than the scientific community expected.
At the same time, the infectious disease expert said the number of hospitalizations doubled in the last 20 days.
The current restrictive measures in the city of Hania, Crete, and the island of Zakynthos on the Ionian Sea, imposed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, are extended to 6 p.m. on August 18, the General Secretariat of Civil Protection announced on Thursday.
The restrictions, which went into effect on August 6 for the two regions, include an overnight curfew from 1 a.m. – 6 a.m., and a 24-hour ban on the playing of music in bars and cafes.
Deputy Minister of Health Vassilis Kontozamanis on Thursday nudged unvaccinated health workers at state-run and private hospitals to have their jab against Covid-19 before the set deadline.
In a letter to the directors of Greece’s regional health clinics, Kontozamanis said that health workers are obliged by law to receive their first dose of vaccination, or single-dose shot, by September 1.
The minister warned that, according to law, health workers at state hospitals will be suspended if they refuse to have their vaccination.
