Update – 13/10/2021

corona virus

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece 682,394. 32 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 15,210. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 336. 3,065 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 602 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 439 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

Greek Premier Kyriakos Mitsotakis got his third dose of the jab against Covid-19 at the Prometheas mass vaccination center in the northern suburb of Maroussi on Tuesday.

“I would ask everyone to do the same, either for the 3rd dose or especially for those who have not yet been vaccinated. Because now the data is so emphatic that it does not allow any doubt as to the effectiveness and safety of the vaccine,” he said after leaving the center.

Every citizen getting a booster shot in Greece is given the Pfizer-BioNTech jab, regardless of the previous ones used.

Mitsotakis received the first dose of Pfizer-BioNTech’s jab on December 27, 2020, when the first batch of the company’s vaccines arrived in Greece, and the second one on January 18.

Greece’s coronavirus referral hospitals will no longer dedicate the lion’s share of their resources to treating patients with Covid-19 at the expense of people suffering from other illnesses, Skai television quoted a Health Ministry source as saying on Tuesday.

Beds at intensive care units will be split 50/50 between Covid and other patients, the source indicated, as opposed to the current practice of having entire ICUs reserved for Covid patient care.

“The National Health System will not be cancelling any more surgeries,” the unnamed source was quoted as saying, adding that it is the ministry’s decision that no more patients should be left behind when the vaccine against Covid is so readily available.

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused substantial reductions in medical services and procedures relating to cancer diagnostics and treatment by health providers in Greece, new data show.

The data, based on surveys conducted by the Laboratory of Health Economics and Management (LabHEM) at the University of Piraeus, were presented during an event held by the All.Can Greece platform Thursday.

Data show that 35% of cancer patients said the pandemic affected their communication with their doctor, while 20% said it had delayed the start of their chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

Up to 90% of cancer surgery procedures were canceled or postponed in the second and third waves of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, 17% of respondents said they had problems taking a diagnostic test, 30% had difficulty scheduling an appointment, and 10% said they had to wait 2.4 months for a screening.
