Update – 14/02/2022

corona virus

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece 2,174,093. 72 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 24,754. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 499. 10,853 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 2,944 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 1,269 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

Greece’s Civil Aviation Authority scrapped a requirement for travellers from the United States, Canada and Australia to present a negative Covid-19 test, provided they have a vaccination certificate or a certificate of recent illness.

The new measure took effect on Saturday and will apply until February 21.

The port city of Patra in the Peloponnese has canceled its carnival street parade due to coronavirus restrictions.

While some carnival events will still go ahead, the organized street party, one of the city’s annual highlights, will be canceled for the third year in a row, Mayor Kostas Peletidis told a press conference Friday.

Carnival season kicks off next week.

Parents have been advised to be on the lookout for symptoms that may be due to multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) associated with Covid-19 and which usually appears 4-6 weeks after coronavirus infection.

In cases when a child that has recently been ill with Covid-19 develops a high fever, parents should immediately contact their doctor, according to Vana Papaevangelou, professor of pediatric infectious diseases and a member of the government’s experts committee.

Indicatively, a study by pediatrics professor Maria Tsolia showed that by the end of 2021, 119 children with this syndrome had been hospitalized in Greece, with a median age of 8 years. Two out of 10 children had to be admitted to an ICU. There were also several cases of myocarditis and other heart complications. MIS-C is a condition where different body parts can become inflamed, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or gastrointestinal organs.

Experts reportedly expect that there will be more cases related to this syndrome as a result of the Omicron variant that peaked eight weeks ago.

The data provided Thursday by Papaevangelou, Alternate Health Minister Mina Gaga and assistant professor of epidemiology Gikas Magiorkinis, the pandemic in Greece has stabilized at a high level, with the virus having spread significantly. Tellingly, 1.5% of the population today is infected.

Mathematical models suggest that the number of intubated patients will drop to 450 in the next 15 days.

The World Health Organization’s chief scientist, Soumya Swaminathan, said on Friday that the world was not yet at the end of the Covid-19 pandemic as there would be more coronavirus variants.

“We have seen the virus evolve, mutate … so we know there will be more variants, more variants of concern, so we are not at the end of the pandemic,” Swaminathan told reporters in South Africa, where she was visiting vaccine manufacturing facilities with WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
