Update – 14/09/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities yesterday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 13,243. 3 new deaths were reported on Sunday, raising the total number to 305. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 54. 207 new cases where announced yesterday in Greece, maintaining the daily number of cases above 200. 120 of the new cases were found in the Attica region.

Schools open today amid concerns due to a new spike in coronavirus infections and along with resistance by some parents to a regulation stipulating that all children and adults must wear protective face masks. Health authorities had been scrambling over the weekend to ensure that schools are equipped with enough masks. Of equal concern is the fact that some parents have insisted on their right to send their children to school without masks – questioning their efficacy or even suggesting that they could do harm. Authorities have said that children turning up to school without a mask will not be punished but will not be permitted inside and their parents will be called to collect them.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced twelve new government support measures to support Greece’s businesses and workers who are still recovering from the impact of the coronavirus crisis.

The measures, which include tax cuts, employment subsidies and extension of reduced VAT on transport and travel packages, total 6.8 billion euros.

The government is seeking to contain the rise in unemployment through a broad and generous program of corporate subsidies encouraging businesses to hire more employees, and by extending a ban on layoffs for any professionals benefitting from the pandemic support measures. In practical terms, the scheme represents a new social contract with employers and will take immediate effect: The state will cover a large part of non-salary costs in the coming months for those who make hirings, mainly subsidizing social security contributions. Those benefitting from this program or other measures will not be able to dismiss any staff.

Despite the early termination of this year’s tourism season due to the resurgence of coronavirus cases, the Greek destination has won the safe operation challenge, which serves as a promise for a much better 2021. Provisional estimates by large hoteliers and tour operators, as well as by leading officials in the tourism sector for next year see the industry’s activity recovering 50% of the record year of 2019, up from 20% in 2020. This is unless a serious surge in the pandemic takes place, or the standoff with Turkey spins out of control.
