Update – 15/09/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities yesterday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 13,420. 5 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 310. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 59. 180 new cases where announced yesterday in Greece, dropping the daily number of cases below 200. 102 of the new cases were found in the Attica region.

The government is expected to announce today, new, stricter measures for Attica to curb the spread of the coronavirus, as daily infections have risen into triple digits, amid concerns that the reopening of schools on Monday could lead to a further rise in cases. Among the measures being mulled by the Health Ministry’s expert committee is the mandatory use of masks at street markets and the recommendation for the broader use of masks in all outdoor areas. Another possible measure is the suspension for 15 days of all mass outdoor events such as concerts, theatrical productions and lowering the attendance limit for events such as weddings and christenings from 50 to 20.

The reopening of schools on Monday, which will be closely monitored by health experts, went relatively smoothly, with only limited protests by parents objecting to their children wearing face masks in schools. Incidents were reported in Achaia, Thessaloniki and on Crete, where a parent was allegedly verbally and physically abusive toward a teacher. One problem reported on Monday was that many of the masks distributed in schools were either too big or badly made. Health authorities said they would distribute new ones, while many children went to school wearing masks their parents had bought for them.

Greece took delivery of 200,000 Covid-19 rapid antigen tests to increase the daily number of testing for coronavirus cases in the country.

The purchase of the rapid antigen tests was made by Greece’s National Organization of Public Health after receiving a donation of one million euros.
