Doctors across the nation of Greece are warning the public to avoid gathering in crowds ahead of the approaching holiday season. Considering coronavirus, and the recent increase in cases, doctors warn that holiday parties could cause major spikes in the number of cases and deaths. According to Greek press reports, health workers are advising the Greek public that traditional holiday get-togethers will only be safe if Greece begins to record double-digit case numbers, instead of hundreds, each day.

European Union countries on Tuesday approved a series of guidelines aimed at facilitating free movement across the bloc and avoiding further disruption during the coronavirus pandemic. During a meeting in Luxembourg, envoys for the 27 member states agreed on a common approach to travel restrictions and testing to help citizens and workers get more clarity on how they can transit across the continent. In March, several EU nations hastily closed their borders to stop the spread of the virus, even though the EU’s Schengen agreement allows residents to move freely between countries without visas. The action blocked traffic and medical equipment “The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted our daily lives in many ways. Travel restrictions have made it difficult for some of our citizens to get to work, to university or to visit their loved ones,” said Michael Roth, the German minister for Europe. “It is our common duty to ensure coordination on any measures which affect free movement and to give our citizens all the information they need when deciding on their travel.”

On Wednesday, a migrant and refugee identification and reception center on the Greek island of Chios was closed down after what the Greek health authorities termed “numerous” new coronavirus cases were diagnosed there. The Migration Ministry said that the lockdown, which was decided upon by Greece’s Ministries of Migration, Health and Citizen Protection, will stand until October 21. No exact figures were given as to the extent of the outbreak. The officials also stated that they had requested that the National Public Health Organization (EODY) create an emergency team at the camp for the purposes of contact tracing and for the treatment of the virus among the camp’s inhabitants. They also noted that women at the facility who are more than five months pregnant will be transferred as soon as possible to the Greek mainland so that they will not have to give birth in the same hospital that houses Covid patients. They will be living in the vicinity of Greece’s already-established Covid-19 referral hospitals.
