A university student tested positive for Covid-19 this week, in the first official case announced since the new academic year begun, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki said on Wednesday.

The math student, who has not been unvaccinated, came to class on Monday (Oct. 11) with a negative rapid test and attended two courses but on Tuesday he tested positive.

The university implemented the Covid management protocol by informing all the students, teaching and administrative staff, as well as the competent authorities and ministries about the incident.

Cleaning crews disinfecting the premises and the infected student was quarantined for 10 days, along with the students or teachers who presented a rapid or PCR test last Monday to attend or teach classes.

“Those who are fully vaccinated or became ill in the last six months will monitor their health and in case they have the slightest symptom within the next 10 days, they will not come to school and will undergo a rapid or PCR test,” said university Rector Nikos Papaioannou.

Greek startup BIOPIX-T is proceeding with the sale of a portable molecular diagnosis device named “Pebble” as well as its compatible coronavirus test, turning the research that the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (IMBB-FORTH) has conducted at Iraklio on Crete into a commercial product.

The startup has already started selling its product to small diagnostic centers and clinics in Greece and Cyprus, and it intends to promote it also in North Africa and other European countries.

According to the company statement, this is Greece’s first portable molecular diagnosis device (Pebble qcLAMP Platform) based on a technology that allows it to be used at the point of healthcare. The Covid test that is used with it bears the name “COV19 qcLAMP kit.”

Both the Pebble and the diagnostic test have been registered with the National Pharmaceuticals Organization (EOF) and shared with other European Union member-states.

The cost of the device is lower than the conventional PCR equipment that is also heavier and is harder to carry to where the patient may be: The BIOPIX-T device costs some 750 euros, while each Covid test costs about €9.

Nurses are seen welcoming students at the capital’s Panteion University on Syngrou Avenue after the government hired temporary medical professionals and additional security staff as tertiary institutions resumed face-to-face teaching. The medical staff are tasked with Covid-19 vaccination and recovery certificates as well as helping manage potential virus outbreaks on campus. Meanwhile, some lectures will be held at municipal halls in proximity to the university in a bid to support physical distancing and reduce transmission. Skeptics nevertheless criticized the government for failing to take health measures to protect vulnerable students and faculty staff.
