Update – 16/09/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities yesterday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 13,730. 3 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 313. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 67. 310 new cases where announced yesterday in Greece, raising the daily number of cases above 300. 197 of the new cases were found in the Attica region.

As an upward trend in coronavirus infections continues the government announced a raft of new restrictions for the greater Athens area. The new measures were announced taking into account the latest epidemiological data regarding Attica, as more than half of Greece’s Covid-19 cases have been appearing in the region for several days. The measures extended the mandatory use of protective face masks to all outdoor areas which draw crowds while obliging live music venues to close and restricting attendance at concerts and open-air cinemas.

Meanwhile concerns have also grown about an increase in the number of Covid-19 patients in intensive care units. More than 60 percent of Attica hospitals’ ICU capacity is taken, ringing alarm bells for health authorities who want to ensure the country’s health service does not find itself unable to respond to the pandemic.

Masks are henceforth compulsory in all places of work and all open-air venues that can become crowded such as squares, bus stops, street protests and lines outside shops.

Street markets will be scaled down in size by 50 percent – with an obligatory distance of 3 meters between each stall – and the use of face masks will be mandatory for all. At cafes and restaurants, a maximum of six people will be allowed to sit at each table. Authorities are also calling on those aged over 65 to wear masks at all times.

The Municipality of Athens has further digitally upgraded its public services, as part of its wider effort to modernize its operations. More specifically, as of Tuesday, members of the public who want to visit offices of the municipality to process their affairs and are not able to do so remotely via the digital services platform will be able to book appointments online for 298 different procedures.
