Update – 16/10/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities on Tuesday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 23,947. 13 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 482. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 82. 453 new cases where announced yesterday in Greece, maintaining the daily number above 400. 207 of the new cases were found in the Attica region.

One of the worst hit areas in the country is the region of Kozani in northern Greece, which has been placed under a lockdown. Civil Protection Deputy Minister Nikos Hardalias said the area had over 220 active cases, with 554 of their traced contacts obliged to keep quarantine, and “dozens of small, controlled but risky and geographically dispersed smaller clusters in the entire area.”  “Due to the increased epidemiological burden in the wider region of Kozani the entire Regional Unit of Kozani is set from tomorrow (Friday), at 06.00 and for 14 days, until October 29, 2020, at the Alarm Level category 4 – Increased Risk,” a statement issued by the authorities says.

The “Alarm Level category 4 – Increased Risk” category provides for the mandatory use of a mask in all indoor and outdoor areas, the suspension of all gatherings in public and private spaces, as well as a ban on movement outside the Kozani Regional Unit. Also, all entertainment venues, archaeological sites, playgrounds and courts or property registry offices are shut down, as are all restaurants/food providers except for their delivery sections. Schools may remain open under strict measures including wearing of masks, while college-level courses may only take place online.

According to the 13 deaths, Gkikas Magiorkinis, an assistant professor of epidemiology at Athens University, said that the spike in deaths was “the result of the activity we saw with the virus 15 days ago.” He said the fatalities were all people aged over 70 with underlying ailments such as dementia, diabetes or heart or lung problems.
