Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis urged again on Saturday people over 60 years of age who remain unvaccinated to get the jab as soon as possible.
Government sources told state-run news agency AMNA earlier in the day that 90% of those aged over 60 have already been vaccinated or booked an appointment.
“90%, that is 9 in 10 people over 60, have been vaccinated,” he said during a visit to a health center in Megara on Saturday.
“I want to emphasize that, from the moment we imposed this mandatory measure, almost half of those who had not been vaccinated made the right choice to get inoculated. So this measure was successful. We want to increase vaccination rates in the sensitive age group of those over 60,” he added.
The government has said that those who remain unvaccinated in that age group after January 16 will be fined 100 euros each month.
Greece has received 5,700 treatments of molnupiravir for Covid-19, while another 25,000 are on their way, Alternate Health Minister Mina Gaga told state-run news agency AMNA on Saturday.
The next doses await the approval of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) which is expected next month, she said.
This treatment has already been licensed for emergency use by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA). In Greece, the treatment can be given with the patients’ written consent, until the European approval process is completed.
“At this stage of the pandemic, the Omicron variant is predominant and according to international scientific data it is not sensitive to treatment with monoclonal antibodies, which were administered to patients infected with the Delta mutation, with positive results. Therefore, the international scientific community is turning to oral therapies,” she was quoted as saying.
Some 21 pupils are not attending school in Iraklio on Crete because of the stance of their parents, who oppose the safety protocols to contain the spread of the coronavirus, with authorities seeking the intervention of the local prosecutor.
Speaking to Creta TV, the director of primary education in Iraklio, Manolis Beladakis, said the prosecutor’s office will be informed about the issue on Monday “so that the children’s right to education is not violated.”
Beladakis noted that the prefecture of Iraklio has 27,500 pupils and that the 21 children form “an infinitesimal percentage.”
“But for us it is important that not one pupil is left behind,” he said
A total of 6,364 pupils and teachers tested positive for Covid-19 in the weekly nationwide screening designed to stem the spread of the virus, according to data provided by the Education Ministry.
Only two schools have suspended classes due to Covid-19 cases, the ministry said.
Two earlier rounds of Covid-19 testing, conducted since schools opened following the winter break on January 10, revealed 25,000 infections.
