Update – 17/02/2021

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 173,905. 29 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 6,181. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 309. 1,121 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 538 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 144 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

Vaccinations halted in Attica due to snow

Due to the dangerous driving conditions, including icy, slippery roads and reduced visibility, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis urged citizens to remain at home and avoid all unnecessary movement outside the home.

“We are facing a very severe weather phenomenon and it seems that it will last until tomorrow morning. It will impact Attica, Evia, and Crete, especially tomorrow,” he stated.

Health officials have put a hold on coronavirus vaccinations in Attica due to the heavy snow and dangerous driving conditions.

All vaccine appointments for Tuesday will be moved to another day, so those in line for the shot will still receive their inoculation.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis again touted his vaccine certificate initiative during an interview with the Bloomberg news outlet on Monday. Professing that there will be a noticeable improvement in the coronavirus situation by April, the Greek leader stated that he was optimistic for a much-improved summer tourism season in Greece.

Thanks to Greece’s effective vaccine rollout, coupled with the country’s successful management of the coronavirus pandemic, the nation will begin to see an improvement in the economy in the next few months, he noted.

Stating that several European Union member states have expressed support for his vaccine certificate idea, the Greek premier expressed his hopes that there would soon be widespread European solidarity for the concept.
