Update – 18/06/2021

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 417,253. 16 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 12,494. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 321. 519 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 252 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 44 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

Play centers, amusement parks and the kind of bazaars that accompany “panigyria” (local fairs), along with spas and other wellness services, will be allowed to go back into operation as of Saturday, a government official confirmed on Thursday.

Speaking at the Health Ministry’s daily briefing, Deputy Minister for Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias also announced the reopening of indoor movie theaters, though capacity will be restricted to 50% and patrons will have to show a Covid-19 vaccination certificate or a negative self-test result at the door.

The government’s committee of experts has also agreed to a petition for gym-goers to be exempt from wearing a mask so long as they have been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, restrictions are also being eased at retail stores, which will  be allowed to admit 1 person per 16 square meters of surface area instead of the current limit of 1 person per 25 sq.m.

The National Bioethics Committee is expected to deliver its report on the constitutionality and ethics of mandatory inoculations for certain professional groups to the government possibly as soon as Thursday.

The government has been considering vaccinating healthcare professionals and nursing home employees as a way to reduce infections in hospitals and retirement homes.

The report, which will be studied in detail, is expected to be in favour of the government’s plan, and it remains to be seen if the same recommendation will be given for other professionals, such as teachers.

Those who refuse to be inoculated will not be fired, but they will transferred to other divisions who are not in contact with vulnerable citizens, Kathimerini understands.

Women under 50 should choose a Covid-19 vaccine other than the one by Johnson & Johnson, an epidemiology expert on Thursday, citing the few cases of blood clots recorded in the United States.

“The American EODY [CDC] says that women under 50 should choose another vaccine. With this vaccine too, some thrombotic events have occurred, though more rare,” said Athina Linou, an epidemiology professor at the University of Athens, speaking to Mega channel.

“In the US, they are talking about 7 side effects per million,” she added, emphasizing that the specific vaccine should not be withdrawn and that it is safe for women over 50, as well as men.

Linou also clarified that the J&J jab is effective against all Covid variants.
