Update – 19/01/2021

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 148,925. 19 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 5,488. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 322. 320 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 139 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 35 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

In Greece, over 85.200 people have gone under vaccination so far. As the vaccination process is under way, health officials have doubts that 2 million people will receive a dose until the end of March. A slight indifference is observed among citizens over the age of 85 to get the vaccine. The government will have to stress the vaccine’s importance to those people, as to move on with the vaccination of the entire population, and for society to achieve a needed level of immunity to return to a normal lifestyle.

The vaccination of Greece’s public is also dependent on the number of received doses from the EU. The 2 million people threshold, may be achieved only after receiving AstraZeneca’s vaccine, that has yet to be approved.

The pandemic, costs almost 3 billion euros to Greece’s economy each passing month. The ministry of finance is planning how EU’s support fund will be distributed to boost the economy. A financing plan to promote mergers and acquisitions of small and medium companies, is also discussed for implementation. Banks are preparing funding programs for businesses in recovery.

Greece’s government is helping businesses recover, on the condition they keep their employees. However, as the cost of the 534 allowance to employees is way too high, it is under discussion to free the market with the return of people to their jobs.

In the following days, ski resorts might be approved for operation, meaning free travel between regions. The reopening of bars and restaurants will be the final step for the market to return to an almost normal situation.

Donald Trump had announced an opening of US borders to British, Irish and Brazilians but the measure will not be implemented as new president of the US Joe Biden is taking over tomorrow.
