Update – 19/02/2021

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 176,059. 27 new deaths were reported raising the total number to 6,221. The number of patients treated in intensive care units is currently 320. 1,400 new cases were announced yesterday in Greece. 687 of the new cases were found in the Attica region and 160 new cases in the Thessaloniki region.

With occupancy at Attica’s Covid-19 intensive care wards reaching 85% this week, it is unlikely that the hard lockdown introduced on February 11 will be lifted at the end of the month as originally planned. The committee of medical experts advising the government on its management of the pandemic is expected to recommend an extension to the measures for a couple more weeks beyond the original deadline of February 28 during its weekly briefing on Friday. “I do not think we will be reopening that fast,” Maria Tsolia, a professor of pediatric medicine and infectious diseases, and one of the members of the committee, told Skai TV on Thursday. “We would have to see a reduction in numbers in Covid ICU; we cannot reopen with capacity at 70-80%,” she added.

Government spokesman Christos Tarantilis appeared upbeat, however, on Thursday, citing “positive data” from the Health Ministry indicating that new infections in the Greek capital have been showing signs of easing in recent days. “We would like to believe that the situation will improve over the next few days so that an extension of the lockdown will not be needed,” he told a regular press briefing.

Greece, once the only European country with “green” areas on the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control’s (ECDC) coronavirus map, has now become red and yellow. The ECDC releases a series of maps each Thursday that indicate the epidemiological circumstances across Europe, based on data for the 14 days up to midnight on Tuesday of each week. According to its most comprehensive map, which combines coronavirus positivity, testing, and notification rates, Greece has now become “yellow” and “red,” indicating increased risk of coronavirus transmission. In the past, Greece was the only European country with “green,” or low risk, zones. Now, Iceland and Norway are the only countries in Europe that have green areas.
