Update – 19/06/2020

As of the latest update by the Greek authorities yesterday, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 diagnosed cases in Greece is 3,227. The death toll from Covid-19 rose to 188, with one more fatality recorded in the past 24 hours. The number of patients treated in intensive care units stands at 10, while 117 patients have left the intensive care unit.

MEASURES/RESTRICTIONS

  • The new school year (2020-2021) will start on September 7 nationwide to cover the material that was left out in the previous term after schools were closed to halt the spread of the coronavirus, the Education Ministry announced on Thursday. Pupils are also advised to keep last year’s books as teachers have been told to cover the material that is necessary in order to proceed to the next class.
  • Businesses found to be committing serious violations of health rules aimed at curbing the coronavirus face being shut down for three months and hefty fines. This is according to a joint ministerial decision published on Thursday in the Government Gazette. Fines can range from 1,000 to 50,000 euros and closures from 15 to 90 days.

  • Consular services at the US Embassy in Athens will reopen later this month with social distancing measures in place. The US envoy encouraged American citizens to visit the consulate website for updates on services, the status of appointments and advice to Americans visiting or living in the country.
  • China’s Mammoth Foundation has donated key laboratory testing equipment for Covid-19 to Greece, boosting the country’s fight against the pandemic.
